Time for a new laptop
While the laptop I currently have has been great; it is getting a bit old. It is a Dell Latitude CPx, circa 1997-1998. It has been one heck of a workhorse; but it is getting a bit "twitchy" in it's old age.
While this is something I could normally live with; I'm afraid that it just might die on me in the middle of my upcoming Lotusphere session. Which would suck, in a very big (and embarrassing) way. So, it is time to spend some money I don't have on a new laptop.
I really like the Dell XPS M170, but the price factor blows the deal. This thing, while cool, is waaaay overpriced. There must be a lot of folks with too much money or too little sense out there buying these; because Dell is selling them as fast as they can build them.
I've pretty much settled on a Dell Inspiron 9300. It sports the same basic features and chassis as the XPS, but without the "stupid factor" excessive cost.
Truth be told, what I would like best is a Panasonic Toughbook, probably the 29 or the 51. These things are pretty much indestructible; and they score super high on the "cool geek stuff" scale. The problem with them is similar to that of the XPS; they cost too darn much. Well that, and Panasonic seems to deliberately want to make it difficult to purchase one. (Check their website and pretend you are ready to buy one if you don't believe me).
Anyway, that's what I'm thinking about today.

Toshiba makes a pretty nice laptop. I've also looked at some of the HPs as well.
You'll notice IBM is nowhere on my list. Thinkpads are, IMO, akin to Macintoshes: people either love them or hate them. I'm in the latter group. There is just something about them bothers me; I can't qualify it other than recognizing it as an emotional, viseral dislike.
Which means that they will never get a fair shake from me. My feelings toward the entire IBM Thinkpad line are similar to those a certain journalist has towards my favorite software. At least I'm intellectually honest enough to admit my bias up front.
Anyway, I ended up ordering the Dell Inspiron 9300. It should arrive next week before Thanksgiving. I'll post full specs and cost in a seperate blog entry.
